This online calendar of events emphasizes educational, archaeological, preservation, and history related programs throughout the year across South Dakota. Green entries denote activities at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. Blue entries denote off-site activities sponsored by the SD State Historical Society and/or the Historical Society Foundation. Event: South Dakota Environments: A Window to Past Times Exhibit
Description:
Visitors will explore the state as it looked in the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Pleistocene and Holocene epochs and witness the animals found on the land. Animals ranging from a Tyrannosaurus Rex to a Short-Face Bear will be featured, along with a massive representation of a mammoth. The exhibit also demonstrates how, over time, the location of the land that became South Dakota has shifted along with what became the North American continent.

Event: SD State Archives Open
Description: The State Archives is open every 1st Saturday of the month. Staff will be available to assist with research. The State Archives manages a collection of photographs, films, maps, books, newspapers, state and county records, as well as personal and organizational records.

Additional Comments: The book club meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at the Cultural Heritage Center. Occasionally the date, time, or location my change for a special program. All books are available for purchase at the Heritage Store located in the Cultural Heritage Center and at the Capitol. The History & Heritage Book Club is open to everyone. Event: 2015 South Dakota Historic Preservation Advocacy Day
Description: Please join historic preservation advocates from across South Dakota for the third annual Historic Preservation Advocacy Day at the State Capitol in Pierre. Supporters of historic preservation are invited to visit with legislators and share what is happening in their community to spread the collective message that historic preservation benefits all South Dakotans. // Tables in the Presidents and Speakers Lobbies on the 3rd Floor of the State Capitol will serve as a home base for preservation advocates from 9 am to 12 pm. Participants are asked to stop by the tables to pick-up one-page issues sheets and other helpful materials to share with legislators. Due to the lack of offices for the majority of legislators, advocates are strongly urged to contact their legislators in advance of Advocacy Day to schedule meetings on this date. // If you are unable to be present, please take part by e-mailing your legislators and include the issues sheet.
